Creating a better future

I'm looking for ways to describe a regenerative economy. What's it going to look like to live in a world where business is good for the environment - consuming greenhouse gases, increasing natural habitat. What else will be different? How do we turn the sustainability conversation from "I don't want more GHG produced" into the reverse image? What is the reverse image anyway?

These are the things that occur to me:

  • New buildings will generate their own power, store their own water and process their own waste. (Like the new Pixel building in Melbourne.)
  • Existing buildings get restored efficiently to maximuse the use of their embodied energy and improve their environmental performance. (Like the re-manufacture of the windows in the Empire State Building)
  • All products will be designed to be totally safe, and to be easily re-manufactured into more high-quality products.
  • We've found ways to cost-effectively turn hazardous wastes into valuable products (like Japanese company Blest, developing a machine to turn plastic back into oil).
  • Like the planet, the only energy we use is the renewable energy provided by the sun, directly through solar power, or indirectly through wind and other renewable sources.

But this is just my limited imagination. What's in your mind? What new future could you invent that starts "wouldn't it be wonderful if..."

For example:

  • Paper is made from a renewable source of cellulose. We keep our forests for generating oxygen and preserving biodiversity. The area of natural forest is increasing across the planet.

The human brain can't process negatives. "Don't think of a purple elephant" produces an image of guess what? a purple elephant

Less GHG production leaves us with GHG and the implication that reduced GHG is acceptable. High-volume renewable energy plants, combined heat and power installations, mainstream passive solar design - these create positive pictures of alternative strategies.

What positive change are you passionate about?

Solar Energy - The Path to Self-Sufficency

More and more people are "going green" these days. Years ago, the idea of installing solar panels on your roof was a turn off due to the exorbitant cost of this technology. Globally this is quickly changing, with solar energy growing rapidly as a source of electricity around the world in the last 5 years, and in Australia, the industry is exploding. With the generous government rebates due to reduce mid year, the fact of the matter is that everyone should look into making the switch to solar…See More
