What’s South Australia got over the other states?

From Thursday the 8th of January South Australians will have to bring in their own reusable bags for shopping. The topic of banning plastic bags has been kicking around for a number of years with politician Peter Garrett making noises about banning plastic bags while in opposition. Now for those living in SA it is now a reality.

So what has SA got on the rest of the country? Why are they ahead of the other states in taking such a positive step in changing consumer behaviour? You probably only have to look at the next time you empty a bottle of beer or any other beverage and see the label on the back “10c Refund and any Depot when sold in SA”. I have no idea how long this program has been going, but that label on the back which was previous 5c has been there as long as I can remember.

So why don’t other states follow suit with refunds for bottles and bans on plastic bags? What’s holding them back.? I would be interested to hear your views and thoughts.

Cheers Lee

They also have the most expensive state retail electricity pricing in the country - which truly discourages engergy use.
