Keep Thinking about Carbon

The Federal Government has come under intense criticism for “delaying” the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) and so it should. Anyone can be a follower, a waiter or a do-nothinger. The people want problems solved and they want leadership that can solve them.

No doubt there will be widespread fallout, and already the decision has led to reports of major energy investments being delayed or cancelled.

But not all cancelled projects will affect share investors.… Continue

Understanding Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is at the top of the global political and business agenda as governments and industry turn to it as a critically important "energy source" to address climate change and energy security, says the Energy Vision Update 2010: Towards a More Energy Efficient World.

The report, from the World Economic Forum and IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates, aims to help harness this energy source by providing an intellectual framework to understand…

Fossil Fuels Distort Energy Costs

By Victor Bivell

September 2009

The Gorgon liquefied natural gas project in Western Australia got a multi billion dollar customer in China in August, and did Australia ever see so much hoopla and hype from politicians, business and their cheer squads in the media.

Around the same time, the Australian Government’s 20 per cent Renewable Energy Target was passed, and while many Australians took it in their stride with a simple sense of “about… Continue

Business Angels Look to Cleantech

Australian business angels continue to show strong interest in clean technology companies with cleantech now the second leading industry sector of interest, behind only the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

A new survey by the Australian Association of Angel Investors (AAAI) shows that nearly 40 per cent of angel investors expressed interest in unlisted cleantech companies. 55 per cent are interested in ICT, while in third… Continue

Australia Has An Obligation To Lead

As expected the Government’s Draft Legislation for the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) has elicited a wide variety of public responses. Nothing new there, as the CPRS affects many interest groups and many parts of this debate are worth having.

So we watch as environmental groups argue whether the reduction targets should be 5, 15 or 25 per cent and more. That’s great. Please, argue on. We watch as businesses calculate whether they will be net winners or losers and how they… Continue

Being Positive And Patient About Environmental Investments

Some commentators liken the share market to a massive herd that moves one way and then the other. Whatever collective noun you prefer, there is no doubt about how big the current movement is, and its general direction. With world share markets plumbing long forgotten depths, and the once mighty Australian economy joining its global peers with a December quarter shrinkage in size, there is plenty to be negative about.

Now would seem to be a good time for contrarian investors… Continue

Balloon Engines for Solar Power

A Queensland author has proposed a significantly cheaper and more efficient variation of the solar tower concept for generating renewable energy by using a ‘balloon engine’ instead.

In a paper Hot Air Balloon Engine published in Renewable Energy journal, Ian Edmonds of Solartran Pty Ltd outlines a system that can utilize the same thermal updraft principles of a solar tower by using a large hot air balloon, a tethering rope, a generator/ motor drive that is coupled to the… Continue

Electric Cars an Opportunity for Feed in Tariff System

The Germans may not be famous for their sense of humour but a German solar energy trade mission seemed to have a good chuckle in Sydney last month as they explained how Germany is the world leader in solar energy despite having a northern European level of sunshine. The prospect of doing business in high sunshine Australia also seemed to give them good cheer.

The reason for their success is the German Government’s feed in tariff system, so it was the right place for NSW… Continue

What is Environmental Investment?

Many people confuse ethical investment, sustainability investment and environmental investment. These are the three main types of environmental investment that have arisen over the past 30 years, and while each has a contribution to make to the environment, they also have key differences as investment strategies.

Ethical investment was the first approach to develop; it has some history in the 19th century and began more formally in the 1970s and 1980s. Ethical investment is… Continue
