Leon Young A new kind of optimism?

I'm sure most of our visitors here at Change2 came out of the 2007 Federal election with a sense of optimism. Kevin Rudd was going to put a price on carbon, get indigenous reconciliation back on the agenda and take a moral and compassionate stance on asylum seekers. We were also going to see a visionary piece of national infrastructure built; the National Broadband Network.

I'm also sure most of you shared my sense of disappointment at the way the climate debate

Lee Stewart ACT set ambitious emissions targets. A great program or destined to fail?

This morning the ACT is set to announce a very ambitious target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020. The announcement has left some wondering whether this is realistic as the territory recently downgraded its NoWaste 2010 target to just an inspirational goal.

Terence Jeyaretnam Zero Carbon Plan for Australia

Did you know that enough sunlight falls on the earth’s surface every hour to meet world energy demand for an entire year? That the average amount of solar energy that falls on Australia is about 15,000 times the nation’s energy use? Then there’s wind, geothermal, wave and hydro to draw on, in vast renewable quantities. Coal is cheap, but that’s because

Lee Stewart Citizens Assembly? More Consultation On Climate Change? Didn't we do that years ago?

Being an optimist I thought that maybe Julia Gillard might be a bit different and act on Climate Change and that the upcoming election we would see a credible climate change policy from a major party.

So the news coming out today on Julia's

Nick Potter The Buzz Beyond Sustainability

It’s official: I’ve ended my relationship with sustainability. We still see each other occasionally but the magic is missing. I’ve moved on to other words. We actually cut loose a long time ago. So it’s sayonara sustainability. It was great while it lasted.

Breaking up with sustainability wasn’t easy. We had a long-term relationship. We also keep bumping in

Change2 ABC of Carbon Weekly Blog - B is for Biomass

India is attempting to move away from fossil fuels to make maximum use of its available biomass for energy generation. It is also drawing on international investment to finance its projects through the clean development mechanism (CDM). The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) announced on 2 November 2007 the allocation of… Continue

Terence Jeyaretnam In search of the elusive Green Shopper

There are two types of people in the world - those who divide people into groups and those who don’t. In marketing, the practice of customer segmentation is important. It helps make sense of the complexity in the way decisions are made, especially in purchasing. Often, dividing people into four or five groups makes… Continue

Paige Andrews Trading one environmental disaster for another – Will the BP spill be the catalyst for passing US climate legislation?

After hearing day in and day out in the news about the (still ongoing) BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico as containment attempts continue to fail, one begins to get mad at the lousy regulators and the Big Oil companies (especially BP) and look for ways to show their outrage. Change2’s Lee Stewart has started to… Continue

Lee Stewart What does it take to change your purchasing decisions?

The car was running low on petrol the other day and I was about to pull into the nearest station. I then realised that it was a BP and then had a quick call to make. Fill up with BP or drive another few K’s to the Shell Station. With all the recent events hap

Frank Mueller Changing direction of businesses towards Sustainability Management (SM) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - A background viewpoint

Hi everybody,
I just signed up to this community due to a recommendation. As a researcher and consultant in the broader area of Sustainability in industries I am active in the South East Asian region for about 10 years.

In this blog I would like to start a discussion on how we actually can change industries towards more sustainable behaviour. When I follow discussions around the world, I noticed that many so called experts just jump the bandwagon without going to the level respecti… Continue

Lee Stewart The Barrier Reef Irony

I just heard that they have re-floated the Shen Neng 1 Bulk Coal Carrier of the Barrier Reef this morning. The fact that the ship was way of course taking a well known short cut and the threat of a major disaster of our precious Barrier Reef brought a strong outcry from our politicians. The Australian PM Kevin Rudd came out and said that there is no greater asset for Australia than the Great Barrier Reef and that he takes threats to the reef seriously.

I was good to see that the irony… Continue

Eco Investor Understanding Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is at the top of the global political and business agenda as governments and industry turn to it as a critically important "energy source" to address climate change and energy security, says the Energy Vision Update 2010: Towards a More Energy Efficient World.

The report, from the World Economic Forum and IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates, aims to help harness this energy source by providing an intellectual framework to understand it..

Terence Jeyaretnam A Low Carbon Growth Plan for Australia

There’s been a campaign of mind washing Australians, by those most to gain, to believe that a response to global warming through carbon mitigation will be at a significant cost to society that will result in job losses and a lower quality of life. This has virtually made the policy proposition for an emissions trading scheme a back-leaning ladder to climb. What’s more, this has turned the pinhole into a doorway for climate change deniers and skeptics to march into.

Terence Jeyaretnam Reframing Business for the 21st Century

The evidence is finally in. Business transactions do result in significant externalised environmental impact, which, if monetised, would result in a third of all profits from the world’s largest companies being eroded away. A recent report by Trucost to the United Nations has made this finding after modeling the environmental impact of the world’s largest 3,000 companies.

The report comes amid growing concern that businesses are merely paying… Continue

Terence Jeyaretnam Sustainability of the Commons

With the black clouds of the GFC looming upon us at the start of 2009, we were cornered to ask some big questions. So what of business sustainability? Is it still important? Would businesses still seek to be green, or would the sustainability budget be one of the first to be cut? But, we were optimistic. In 2008 we no… Continue
