50 'green' new year’s resolutions

This blog post is motivated from an overly indulgent Christmas. A Christmas (like most) that saw excessive amounts of paper being wasted on aesthetically beautiful gifts, salubrious functions catered with more food and drink than physically consumable and enough meat (turkey, ham, chicken, duck and beef) to keep an abattoir in business until February. (Yes... I have the guilts!)

So, here are my 50 'green' new year’s resolutions to counteract all the Christmas… Continue

Guilty m'lord

This morning I threw a take away coffee container into the office bin. All of a sudden I had an old 'Do the right thing' jingle running through my mind - and a sense of guilt of not recycling. So I pulled it out and recycled it.

Got me thinking (dangerous, I know) that guilt is great for the short term motivation but not a great long term. For me, the constant use of guilt makes a something a drag to do.

To me it highlights a challenge to create positive incentives… Continue

Australia's own 'Dr Doom' calls for systemic financial reform

The global financial system is fundamentally flawed and will need more than mere regulatory reforms or fiscal 'pump-priming' to put right, says Steve Keen, Associate Professor at the University of Western Sydney.

Speaking at the Ethical Investor Australian Sustainability Awards, Professor Keen, dubbed Australia's "Dr Doom" because of his consistent and controversial forecast of a long and severe recession, calls for systemic reforms to correct what he described as an… Continue

What is Environmental Investment?

Many people confuse ethical investment, sustainability investment and environmental investment. These are the three main types of environmental investment that have arisen over the past 30 years, and while each has a contribution to make to the environment, they also have key differences as investment strategies.

Ethical investment was the first approach to develop; it has some history in the 19th century and began more formally in the 1970s and 1980s. Ethical investment is… Continue

Too busy

Just finished a really hectic period. Just wondering if one's 'busy-ness' affects the many tiny environmental choices made. A few times I had to stop myself "No don't do that - it'll only take a moment." eg to turn off the computer, food containers etc.

Thinking about it more, I guess the key for me is setting up the facilities and right behaviours before those busy times. Then it's no longer a matter of making choices - rather it's simply the way things are… Continue

The Future Makers

Biomimicking is a word that is being thrown around in the scientific space at the moment. It is when humans replicate natural forms to invent new technology. A simpler name for it is ‘innovation inspired by nature.’

It makes sense. Biological systems do function efficiently, so why not mimic them.

This is a new concept to me, but Australian scientists caught onto the idea decades ago whilst searching for a solution to generate power from renewable… Continue
