Paper everywhere

This morning I found six full colour brochures from different companies crammed into the letterbox. This got me thinking further about the bills on recycled paper or 'condensed' version yet still add thick glossy brochures.Could be interesting to do an analysis of 12 months of letterbox stuffing. Some useful info might be to include:- Number of pages- Total weight- Colour: Single / Full- Source (eg Brochure accompanying, direct marketing, or normal mail)- Type: Paper, brochure, magazine,…See More

A penny saved...

Posted on April 3, 2009 at 2:30pm 0 Comments

Saving a penny means a lot when you're Google's size. They have just revealed the in-house built servers that provide the google service [Google uncloaks once-secret server] The lengths they go to simply amazed me.

This is significant because you have to imagine Google as football fields of computers plus people - and the energy demand to match.

Key points…

Guilty m'lord

Posted on December 18, 2008 at 9:30am 1 Comment

This morning I threw a take away coffee container into the office bin. All of a sudden I had an old 'Do the right thing' jingle running through my mind - and a sense of guilt of not recycling. So I pulled it out and recycled it.

Got me thinking (dangerous, I know) that guilt is great for the short term motivation but not a great long term. For me, the constant use of guilt makes a something a drag to do.

To me it highlights a challenge to create positive incentives… Continue

Too busy

Posted on December 2, 2008 at 4:30pm 0 Comments

Just finished a really hectic period. Just wondering if one's 'busy-ness' affects the many tiny environmental choices made. A few times I had to stop myself "No don't do that - it'll only take a moment." eg to turn off the computer, food containers etc.

Thinking about it more, I guess the key for me is setting up the facilities and right behaviours before those busy times. Then it's no longer a matter of making choices - rather it's simply the way things are… Continue

400 pages of documentation

Posted on October 22, 2008 at 6:00pm 2 Comments

I've just finished wading through a total of about 400 pages of design specifications and quality assurance documents. Apart from the need for some looney juice on the grey matter - this is not very interesting.

What is interesting for me is that this was all done using electronic word-processing documents. Not a single printout. Nary a printer warming. These docs are shared by many people in and out of the office.

In fact the printer around here barely gets used… Continue

Solar Energy - The Path to Self-Sufficency

More and more people are "going green" these days. Years ago, the idea of installing solar panels on your roof was a turn off due to the exorbitant cost of this technology. Globally this is quickly changing, with solar energy growing rapidly as a source of electricity around the world in the last 5 years, and in Australia, the industry is exploding. With the generous government rebates due to reduce mid year, the fact of the matter is that everyone should look into making the switch to solar…See More
