Learning from our Neighbours: Sustainability in Korea

I recently made a trip to Busan, South Korea during which I did my fair share of research into local sustainability actions.  At first thought I imagined that of all places South Korea would not have a high level of sustainable action, it is not the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Korea, or Asia as a whole for that matter.  But I was surprised to see that South Korea, like most countries in the Asia Pacific region are light years ahead of us in New Zealand in terms of…See More

Sustainable Image vs Greenwash

As we all know, the idea of sustainability is spreading steadily through the business community. In addition to this we all know that the perception of being a green business has a positive impact on customer loyalty and over consumer purchasing decisions. The next logical step is to think, as a business, how you can improve your sustainable image through the community. But let it be known that this comes with a big warning!Beware of greenwashing.Everyone wants to portray the image of their…See More

Thanks for sharing your experience in Busan - the place I was born (although I only lived there for a couple of years). Whilst I think that such initiatives taking place in my mother country (or any country for that matter) are great, whether they are genuinely driven by sustainability motive is questionable, imho. South Korea is not a resource rich country like Australia and the level of competition is fairly stiff at every level. Hence there appears to be a heightened awareness of the need to be thrifty which is kind of ingrained in the Korean culture. I wouldn't be surprised if they were doing it purely for the economic benefits - I'm being too cynical perhaps? The moral of the story is, never judge a book by its cover. Not intended to dispute your observations Scott, but knowing the people, the history, and the culture, I think it's fair to say that Korea is far from being a sustainable nation notwithstanding the current developments that are taking place.
