It is a shame that it takes a major disaster for us to start demanding the right questions. My hope is that this time there is some credible long term action to prevent future similar events and that we seriously look at alternative energy sources.

Trading one environmental disaster for another – Will the BP spill be the catalyst for passing US climate legislation?

After hearing day in and day out in the news about the (still ongoing) BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico as containment attempts continue to fail, one begins to get mad at the lousy regulators and the Big Oil companies (especially BP) and look for ways to show their outrage. Change2’s Lee Stewart has started to weigh the costs and benefits of boycotting BP (see his thoughts on this here) and many have turned to…See More

Out in the cold: Protests all around as NGOs banned and negotiations delayed

Chaos has broken out both inside and outside of the Bella Center as access restrictions have gone into effect at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen and negotiations have been delayed due to protests by developing nations. The Bella Center has the capacity to hold 15,000 participants, yet the UN has officially registered forty thousand participants. The poor planning has caused considerable disorder, infuriating those who flew great distances to attend (and sometimes host events) and…See More

Thanks Paige, Great to get the insider perspective on what is going on. I only hope that at the end of it there is something meaningful and a clear direction that includes and supports developing nations.

Life in the Bella Center - a report from COP15

December 7th marked the start of two weeks of climate meetings, high level discussions and side events in Copenhagen for the Fifteenth Conference of Parties (COP15), also called the UN Climate Change Conference. This date also marked the start of fifteen-hour days of coffee, typing, running to events, typing, the occasional meal, typing, and more coffee inside an enormous conference center for yours truly. With over fifteen thousand delegates, NGOs, observer organizations, governmental officials…See More

Interesting comments. I have high hopes that a deal may be stuck at Copenhagen but like many have been somewhat frustrated with all the negative talk. I was at a Green Capital event during the week and one of the speakers made a comment with really…

The end of a fairytale.

Once upon a time there existed a group of nations who gathered together in a land called Copenhagen to sign a treaty that would protect their collective kingdoms from the evils of climate change and ensure the livelihoods of their people for years to come. Despite years of obstacles and reasons to believe otherwise, the agreement was signed in the nick of time and they lived happily ever after. The End.Do you buy this? Me neither. While this story may seem unbelievable in its simplicity, I think…See More

Kyoto Round 2: the US and EU weigh in

In my last post , I discussed the news coming out of the climate talks in Bangkok that developing countries have been in an uproar over the fear that the United States and the EU are trying to kill the Kyoto protocol. This December in Copenhagen, the UN aims to achieve an agreement on an international framework which will take effect once the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. Discussions have become…See More

The U.S., in Bangkok, with a microphone: Are we witnessing the death of Kyoto?

C.P.R. may be needed to revive climate talks and the Kyoto Protocol following two weeks of negotiations in Bangkok. The U.N. climate talks in the Thai capital have resulted in very little save an intensified fear and distrust between rich and poor countries.Fear rose as several developing countries, including China, Brazil and India, accused the United States and the European Union of trying to kill the Kyoto Protocol. Such accusations come following a public showdown this week between the US…See More

Expectations for an international agreement lowered as Copenhagen approaches

With less than 80 days remaining until government officials and national delegates convene in Copenhagen to agree on a framework that will replace the Kyoto Protocol, target expectations and hopes for a framework that will satisfy both developing and developed countries have begun to ebb.Since gaining the EU’s rotating Presidency in July, Sweden has been outlining the position that the EU will take on the negotiations in Copenhagen this upcoming December. While initially optimistic, Sweden’s…See More

A bumpy road to Copenhagen for Rudd's CPRS

There are only a few months left until leaders of the international community convene in Copenhagen to agree upon a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol. Prime Minister Rudd has already declared that Australia will not go to the convention empty-handed. So far, Australia’s climate change legislation has faced some hurdles with its CPRS bill. However, with the recent approval of the renewable energy target, there is hope that Rudd will be able to keep his promise.Following the defeat of Prime…See More
